The former presidents of Somalia accused Hassan

Press Statement

We, the undersigned former Presidents of Somalia, have successfully undertaken separate telephone discussions with the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and President of the Puntland State of Somalia, Saed Abdullahi Deni to address the pressing political differences between them through dialogue, this was to eventually culminate in a sit down.

To this give seminal matter a chance, we agreed with President Hassan Sheikh to halt the ongoing efforts to amend the constitution for a period of two weeks. Sadly, it has become apparent to us that President Hassan Sheikh was not responsive to our set precondition thereby eroding our volitional efforts as esteemed elders of our republic. President Hassan unfortunately went ahead to violate the very first term of agreement which would have laid the possible groundwork for talks.

As individuals who have had the honor and privilege of serving our beloved country, we recognize the urgency and gravity of the current situation. Somalia is at a critical juncture with threats to our territorial integrity, political unity and sovereignty. We believe, the only possible way out of such a situation is a collective political goodwill, dialogue, cooperation and comprise. It is evidently clear to us that President Hassan has not honoured his pledge, this has the potential to lead the country into further division and renewed disagreements.

Although we are encouraged by the willingness of both President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and President Saed Abdullahi Deni to engage in mediation efforts and explore avenues for dialogue and consensus-building, we would like to categorically confirm to everyone who is interested in the political affairs of Somalia, the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, is solely responsible for any resulting severance or estrangement subsequent to this time and period.

Signed,
Mr. Sheikh Shariif Sheikh Ahmed
Mr. Mohamed Adullahi Mohamed Farmaajo
