Puntland security forces have intercepted a vessel carrying illegal weapons from Turkey, in what authorities describe as a major blow to a clandestine arms trafficking network operating in the region.
According to initial investigations, the seized weapons were allegedly procured by illicit arms traders with ties to Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.ย
The shipment was reportedly destined for southern Somalia, where it may have fallen into the hands of Al-Shabaab or clan militias involved in ongoing violence across the region.
Security analysts warn that if the weapons had not been intercepted, they could have significantly worsened the fragile security situation in southern Somalia, endangering the lives of unarmed civilians and fueling further instability.
One of the central figures identified in connection with the illegal arms trade is Abdi Nasir Ali Mahamud, owner of Adoon General Trading FZE and a close business associate of Hassan Sheikh.ย
Abdi Nasir is currently under international sanctions by both the United States and the United Kingdom.
Intelligence sources believe Abdi Nasir played a key financial role in Hassan Sheikhโs May 2022 presidential campaign.ย
He is based in Turkey and has been named by the U.S. government as a major facilitator of illicit charcoal and fuel smuggling between Somalia and Iran. He has also been accused of providing financial support to the Houthi militia in Yemen.
Due to his international activities, Abdi Nasir is regarded as a global security threat.
Puntland officials hailed the interception as a critical success in disrupting illegal arms flows and safeguarding Somali civilians.ย
Puntland believes the seized shipment has prevented weapons from reaching extremist groups such as Al-Shabaab and reduced the risk of further bloodshed in Somaliaโs conflict zones.
