

Garowe, (Idil News) β AΒ civil court in Garowe, the capital of the Puntland State, sentenced security guard Abdifitah Abdinur to four years in prison on Thursday after finding him guilty of assaulting an 8-year-old Yemeni refugee boy. The court also banned Abdinur from working in public businesses for one year and ordered him to pay $1,500 in psychological damages to the victimβs family.
The incident, which took place on Tuesday afternoon in Garowe, involved Mohamed Adil Hussein, a young Yemeni refugee, and sparked widespread outrage across Puntland. Authorities arrested Abdinur shortly after the assault and brought him before the First Instance Court, where the case was swiftly adjudicated.
After the videos went viral, Puntland police were able to identify and arrest the suspect within hours.
The Puntland Human Rights Office issued a statement on Wednesday condemning the violent assault and confirming it had worked with Mohamedβs father, Adil Hussein, to file the case. βJustice has been served,β Adil Hussein said following the verdict, expressing satisfaction with the courtβs ruling.
Garowe Mayor Abdulkadir Geeddi apologized for the incident and pointed out the local governmentβs commitment to the refugee family. βMohamed and his family are part of our community,β Geeddi said. βThe municipality has taken full responsibility for his welfare and residence, and we are determined to prevent such incidents in the future.β
The assault has drawn attention to the challenges faced by refugees in the region, with officials pledging to enhance protections for vulnerable populations. Puntland, hosts a growing number of displaced individuals, including many fleeing conflict in Yemen.
