Bosaso, (Idil News) – Puntland forces have launched airstrikes targeting ISIS militant positions in the mountainous areas near the Balidhidin district in Puntland’s Bari region, security sources confirmed. This is the third strike within the first week of Puntland’s Hilaac Offensive Operations performed by unmanned aircraft, which reportedly destroyed key militant bases and resulted in the deaths of several insurgents, officials said Thursday.
General Mohamud Mohamed Ahmed, known as ‘Faadhigo,’ the Puntland military spokesman, told VOA Somali the airstrikes focused on the IL and Camayra mountain areas, which have been militant bases for ISIS militants.
“The swift and decisive action of the Puntland forces prevented any potential damage or casualties along with showcasing our military’s preparedness and vigilance in countering terrorist threats,” a Puntland army official pointed out.
In addition to the airstrikes, the Puntland Counterterrorism Operation captured four foreign ISIS fighters from Ethiopia, Yemen, and Tanzania. Officials confirmed that other militants are being pursued in the ongoing operation.
Puntland’s forces have intensified their offensive in the Cal-Miskaad mountains, where ISIS has faced mounting pressure. Security patrols are also being enforced in areas surrounding the districts of Iskushuban and Qandala.
During the operations, Puntland forces thwarted an attempted ISIS attack involving a small drone carrying explosive devices. The counterterrorism unit also intercepted and downed three additional explosive-laden drones in hopes of significantly increasing their capability to counter emerging threats.
The crackdown signals Puntland’s commitment to fully eradicating ISIS’s presence in Somalia, where the group has sought to establish a foothold. As the operations continue, Puntland authorities have vowed to maintain pressure on militant groups operating in the mountainous terrain.
