Sonali reported that since USAID resumed food assistance at the end of last year, the United States and its partners have distributed food to 2.4 million people in January alone. During her visit to food distribution centers in Afar and Tigray, the administrator shared that she had witnessed “the critical need facing these communities as they seek to recover from years of conflict and cope with the ongoing drought.”
Last December, an outlook report released by the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) stated that a staggering four million individuals are at risk of experiencing emergency hunger conditions. When asked about the report, Sonali acknowledged that “if conditions worsen or food aid can’t get to where it is needed most, things could worsen and there is always a chance and a risk of famine.” However, she noted that “At the moment, the data is not available.”
