It is regrettable, according to critics, that some politicians and government officials from Puntland are currently cooperating with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in ways that are perceived as undermining the dignity, autonomy, and political standing of the Puntland State, which was established in 1998.
Puntland has long been regarded as one of the pioneers of Somalia’s federal system and has played a significant role in promoting federal governance as a framework for political stability and power-sharing. For this reason, many Puntland residents believe that its constitutional position, political independence, and historical contributions should be respected and protected.
Supporters of this view argue that Puntland has invested considerable effort and resources over the years in building functioning institutions, maintaining relative stability, and contributing to national political dialogue. They contend that any attempts to weaken Puntland’s authority, interfere in its internal affairs, or create divisions within its political leadership could have negative consequences not only for Puntland but also for the broader federal system in Somalia.
Many Puntland intellectuals, traditional elders, political leaders, civil society organizations, and members of the public believe that unity among Puntland stakeholders is essential.
They argue that differences in political opinion should be addressed through dialogue and consultation while maintaining a common commitment to protecting Puntland’s interests, constitutional rights, and political achievements. In their view, a united approach is necessary to ensure that Puntland continues to play an influential role in shaping Somalia’s future.
Critics of the Federal Government have expressed concerns that Mogadishu may be seeking to expand its influence over the affairs of federal member states through political alliances with certain local politicians and officials.
They argue that such actions can create tensions between the Federal Government and regional administrations, potentially undermining trust and cooperation within the federal system.
These concerns are often linked to previous political disputes in other federal member states. Critics point to tensions and disagreements that have occurred in Jubaland, as well as ongoing political controversies in South -West State, particularly in Baidoa.
They argue that these cases demonstrate the challenges that can arise when relations between the Federal Government and regional administrations become strained. From this perspective, the federal system functions best when all levels of government respect constitutional boundaries, engage in meaningful consultation, and resolve disagreements through dialogue rather than political confrontation.
Those who hold this view believe that the policies of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud risk increasing political polarization if they are perceived as favoring centralization or interfering in regional affairs.
They argue that Somalia’s long-term stability depends on cooperation between the Federal Government and the federal member states, with each side respecting the rights and responsibilities of the other. At the same time, supporters of the Federal Government may disagree with this assessment and argue that national unity and effective governance require stronger coordination between the center and the regions.
Ultimately, many Puntland stakeholders emphasize the importance of safeguarding Puntland’s political institutions, constitutional status, and achievements while remaining committed to Somalia’s overall unity.
They argue that all Somali political actors whether at the federal, regional, or local level should prioritize dialogue, mutual respect, reconciliation, and cooperation. By doing so, they believe Somalia can strengthen its federal system, preserve political stability, and create conditions for greater peace, development, and prosperity for all its citizens.
The destruction of the Puntland State is allegedly being driven by the Turkish government, which is seeking to take control of Puntland’s oil and mineral resources. According to this view, Turkey is spending large amounts of money because most of Somalia’s offshore and onshore oil resources are believed to be in Puntland. Therefore, it is claimed that Turkey wants a Puntland administration that is closely aligned with the Federal Government, particularly President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
According to those who hold this opinion, such developments could undermine the legacy of President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed and the contributions of the individuals who established Puntland. They argue that Puntland was founded to safeguard regional autonomy and political self-governance, and that these principles should be protected and preserved.
