Gara’ad, (IDNE, Editorial) In a significant development, a preliminary understanding has been established with the United Arab Emirates Joint Stock Company for the management of Gara’ad Port. The agreement, a crucial step toward international collaboration, was endorsed by a nine-member committee, with six members voting in favor.
President Said Deni is set to officially sign the agreement this month during his visit to the UAE. This partnership marks a pivotal moment for Gara’ad Port, underscoring the need for substantial international investment to elevate the port’s status. For the UAE, securing a stake in Gara’ad Port represents a strategic move to strengthen its maritime foothold.
Currently, the 3G corridor linking Gara’ad, Galkao, and Goldogob remains a challenging route, requiring four hours of travel. However, significant improvements are anticipated in the near future, promising enhanced connectivity and smoother transit.
One of the standout benefits of Gara’ad Port is its competitive pricing. The cost of transporting goods has been dramatically reduced from $2,400 to $1,300 per container, making it an attractive alternative to other ports. Moreover, the port guarantees consistent shipping schedules, ensuring reliable delivery of goods.
In a related development, a livestock farm near the port is nearing completion and is expected to commence operations soon. This addition is set to bolster the port’s capacity and functionality.
Furthermore, the anticipated removal of the nearby prison will transform Gara’ad Port into Somalia’s primary hub for livestock transfer. This move is poised to consolidate Gara’ad’s position as a vital asset in the region’s economic infrastructure, driving growth and facilitating trade.
