Severe Weather Halts City Life, Closes Roads, and Disrupts Flights

Mogadishu, (IDNE, News Desk) — Heavy rains wreaked havoc in Mogadishu on Sunday, causing significant destruction, displacement, and transportation disruptions. Newly reconstructed roads were swept away, and widespread flooding forced road closures and increased the burden on public transport.

Residents faced severe damage to their homes and belongings. “You can see, from the kitchen, the pantry, the bathrooms to the bedroom, the water is sitting,” a father said, holding his 10-month-old daughter. In the Wajir neighborhood of Karaan district, Nadifo Haji recounted the loss of her possessions, including important documents and electronics, as neighbors rescued her children from the floodwaters.

Aden Adde International Airport suspended operations, with numerous flights delayed or diverted to Nairobi due to heavy rain and dense fog. Reports indicate that half of the scheduled flights were canceled, severely affecting air travel.

The downpour, which lasted for 10 hours, paralyzed traffic and disrupted daily activities. High school exams were impacted, with police vehicles transporting students. The flooding and road damage have sparked significant discussion on social media, particularly concerning the newly constructed roads.

Transportation costs have soared, and fewer public transport options are available. The community faces an arduous recovery as they grapple with the extensive damage caused by the unexpected and severe weather.

This comes after allegations surfaced that Mogadishu Governor Yusuf Jimale Madale looted thousands of dollars, adding to the controversy surrounding the city’s recent infrastructure projects.
