Bosaso, (Idil News) – Acting UN Special Representative James Swan visited Puntland’s commercial capital, Bosaso, accompanied by senior officials from the United Nations’ humanitarian and development agencies.
The delegation met with Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni and his administration to discuss a range of pressing issues, including recent military victories against the Islamic State in Somalia (ISS), humanitarian support for displaced populations, and long-term stabilization efforts in areas recently liberated from extremist control.
The visit comes amid heightened attention to Puntland’s role in combating ISS, achieving notable successes in its military operations. Swan commended these efforts, emphasizing the UN’s commitment to addressing the immediate humanitarian needs of thousands of displaced individuals affected by the conflict. Discussions also focused on how UN programs could bolster longer-term recovery and stability in the region.
In addition to security and humanitarian concerns, Swan addressed the strained relationship between the Puntland administration and the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS). He underscored the importance of unity, noting that it would benefit all Somalis if their leaders could align on shared national goals. “It is in the interest of all Somalis for their leaders to agree on common objectives for the nation and to pursue them collaboratively,” Swan remarked, advocating for amicable resolutions to any disputes in support of Somalia’s broader peace- and state-building agenda.
The visit highlights the UN’s ongoing engagement with Somalia’s regional and federal authorities as the country navigates complex security challenges and humanitarian crises. Swan’s call for cooperation reflects a broader push for cohesion among Somali leaders to ensure sustainable progress in the Horn of Africa nation.
