Hassan Sheikh’s Attempt at Extension: A Threat to Somalia’s Stability

The current political landscape in Somalia is increasingly alarming as President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and 3 members of the National Consultative Council (NCC) appear to be deepening the nation’s crisis rather than resolving it.

With security conditions deteriorating to levels worse than in previous years, fragmentation within the political system has reached a tipping point.

This precarious situation has been exacerbated by the alarming control that Al-Shabaab exercises over large swathes of territory just kilometers away from the capital, Mogadishu.

The aspiration for a democratic process, specifically, the implementation of “one man, one vote”, is now clouded by the harsh realities of political division and insecurity.
Citizens are left questioning the feasibility of such a fundamental democratic principle when the nation remains so fragmented and vulnerable.

The disillusionment is palpable, how can we expect to achieve a fair electoral process in a country where armed groups threaten the stability of its regions?
Moreover, the recent political manoeuvres have raised serious concerns.

The push for an extension of the president’s term, often referred to as a “daylight extension,” is perceived by many as an attempt to cling to power rather than an effort to address the pressing issues facing the country.

This manoeuvring is seen as nothing short of a “Gogol Xaar”, a blatant extension of power without legitimate justification.
Trust in the government is at an all-time low, and the motives behind such extensions are viewed with scepticism.

Many Somalis believe that these actions are a clear indicator of an agenda that prioritises personal and political gain over the welfare of the nation.

Hassan Sheikh’s agenda for extension is increasingly transparent, and the implications are dire.

It is essential for Somali elders, scholars, and civil society to take a united stand against these tactics.

The time has come to speak with one voice; NO EXTENSIONS.

Somalia is bigger than any single group or individual; it belongs to all its citizens.
In this crucial moment, it is imperative that the voices of the people are heard.

If those in power do not heed the call for change, the current administration risks further fracturing the nation.

The future of Somalia hangs in the balance, and the actions taken now will resonate for generations to come.

The need for immediate and decisive action is clear.

The call for unity against corruption and mismanagement must be heeded to ensure a stable and prosperous future for all Somalis.

    Enough is enough!
