Somaliland’s Pursuit of Recognition: A Reality Check

Can Somaliland Attain Recognition from the Federal Government of Somalia?

The question of Somaliland’s statehood is fundamentally a matter that must be decided by the Somali people and the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS), not external actors. The broader Somali population does not support the fragmentation of the nation, nor do they wish to see any part of Somalia secede.

Moreover, the President of Somalia, as the head of state, cannot and should not advocate for the disintegration of the country. His mandate is to uphold national unity and sovereignty.

Opportunities for Somaliland within a Unified Somalia

If Somaliland chooses to engage constructively within the federal framework, it stands to gain significant political and economic benefits, including:

    1. Potential designation as the capital of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

    2. Enhanced political representation and influence within the federal system.

    3. A structured economic recovery plan, including financial support for development and infrastructure.

    The Path Forward

Refusal to acknowledge the political and constitutional realities will only perpetuate Somalia’s fragmentation and hinder the prospects of national reconciliation. A divided Somalia remains vulnerable to internal instability and external pressures, impeding its progress toward sustainable development and governance.

Historically, when emotions are set aside, Somalis have shown a strong preference for unity over separation. The long-term solution to Somalia’s challenges lies in constructive engagement and national cohesion.

It is imperative that Somaliland considers the strategic advantages of reintegration within a federal framework and negotiates for meaningful political and economic arrangements.

A call for unity: Let us work together to build a democratic, federal Somalia—one that is founded on inclusivity, governance, and shared prosperity.
