The Civil Democratic Forces alliance (Tagadom) founding conference, initially delayed twice, is now set to convene in Addis_Abeba on 26 May, 2024, as confirmed by spokesperson Bakri El Jak to Radio Dabanga this week. Elaborating on ongoing negotiations in Jeddah,Saudi_Arabia, El Jak hinted at preliminary discussions taking place.
Established in October last year, Tagadom emerged from the amalgamation of mainstream Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC-Central Council) members and other Sudanese pro-democracy entities. Former Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok assumed the role of chair. The alliance’s core objective is to forge a robust democratic front against the protracted conflict involving the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
El Jak detailed the challenges that led to the postponements of the founding conference from late January to March and eventually to late May, citing intricate logistical hurdles inherent in organizing such a significant event during wartime. Anticipated to draw approximately 600 participants from Sudan’s 18 states and 24 countries, the conference aims to unite resistance committees, civil society organizations, trade unions, political parties, and rebel factions towards realizing a democratic Sudan.
Despite logistical obstacles, particularly concerning safe passage for attendees in conflict zones, the primary concern now revolves around ensuring the secure transit of participants from Sudan to Addis Abeba. The spokesperson highlighted potential complications due to blacklists targeting Tagadom affiliates and the vulnerability of resistance and service committees in various states.
