Kismayo (Idil News) โ In an unprecedented development, the Lower Juba Regional Court in Kismayo has issued an arrest warrant for President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, accusing him of treason, undermining national unity, and conspiring with the terrorist militia Al-Shabaab. The charges include violations of the countryโs provisional constitution, acts against Somaliaโs sovereignty and alleged collaboration with armed militants.
A letter dated November 27, 2024, details the charges against Mohamud, identifying him as โdefendant Hassan Sheikh Mohamud Alasow, born in Jalalaqsi in 1955, motherโs name Suban Sabrie Ahmed.โ The court accuses the president of breaches of the provisional charter and other constitutional violations.
Jubaland State Offers $100,000 Reward for Information Leading to Somalia Presidentโs Arrest
The regional administration of Jubaland has announced a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, following a court order issued in Kismayo. The president faces accusations of serious crimes, including aiding terrorism and undermining the countryโs unity.
The charges, outlined by a Jubaland judge, include:
- Alleged abetting and aiding of the terrorist group Al-Shabaab;
- Illicit arms trafficking;
- Acts of national treason and the destruction of national unity;
- Violations of the Federal Constitution;
- Robbery, embezzlement of public assets, and damage to public land;
- Unlawful killings of civilians;
- Inciting civil war and armed rebellion against the constitutional order.
This comes after a significant constitutional crisis emerged in Somalia on April 30, 2024, when President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud unilaterally amended the Constitution of Somalia.
The move was strongly opposed by Said Abdullahi Deni, the President of Puntland, who subsequently announced Puntlandโs withdrawal of recognition from the Federal Government of Somalia. Invoking Article 4 of the Puntland Constitution, Puntland declared itself an independent state.
Following suit, Jubaland severed all ties with federal institutions after the re-election of its president on November 25, 2024.
