Garowe, (Idil News) – A military court in Puntland, a semi-autonomous region in northeastern Somalia, has sentenced two men in absentia for using online platforms to promote ISIS propaganda and undermine counterterrorism efforts. Mohamed-Deeq Yacqub Siyad, currently residing in Germany, received a 10-year prison sentence, while Ali Ahmed Ali, also known as “Iley” and based in Sweden, was sentenced to five years.
The court accused the two propagandists of spreading disinformation to discredit Puntland’s military operations in the Calmiskaad Mountains, a known militant stronghold. Both individuals have one month to file an appeal.
A spokesperson for the Puntland administration described the verdict as a significant step in combating terrorism, emphasizing the region’s commitment to addressing threats both on the battlefield and in the digital realm. “This verdict underscores Puntland’s determination to counter misinformation and extremist propaganda that undermines our counterterrorism efforts,” the spokesperson said.
